Pinterest Language Explained

The Language of Pinterest

Pinterest language explained! Today, I am going to help you with the language of Pinterest – If you are new to it, it could seem overwhelming and like a whole new language to learn!

Home Feed

When you first set up your Pinterest account, you will notice that it asks you what interests you, the home feed is where you will see these topics. At the top, there is a search space that you can search topics to pin to your boards.

Pin

I always think of Pinning to a cork board! Like we did as children! Like little post it notes. So when you have your boards set up you will create your own pins and also ‘Repin; others. The Pin is the graphic or photo.

Pinning

This is the act of pinning your pin to your board.

Repinning

This is when you pin someone else’s pin to your board.

Board

These are the ‘Cork Boards’ that you Pin your Pins on – Like a mood board you can create a look or vision. You create the boards to support the content pillars of your business.

Rich Pins

These are Pins that you set up on your website that contain meta-data for a real experience – they are like the elite of Pins.

Following

The Following tab is a dedicated space for the latest Pins from the people and boards that a Pinner follows. While the Home Feed is a place for personalized recommendations, the Following tab is exclusively filled with Pins from the Pinterest profiles a Pinner already knows and loves (Source: Pinterest).

Followers

People can follow you on Pinterest via the “Follow” button located on your profile, on your Pins and on your boards. People can follow your entire account or individual boards based on their interests. Since Pinterest is a search engine, you do not need to have a huge following to get results. Most of your traffic will likely come from people who are not even following you. However, the more your followers engage with your Pins, the more Pinterest will recommend your Pins in search results and in the Smart Feed. It therefore works better to have a highly engaged small following, than to have a large following that is not engaging with your content. (Source: The Female Entrepreneur Association)
